What Are the Freeze-Thaw Resistance Indicators of GRC Materials and How to Test Them? Empirical Evidence of Qinglong GRC Key Durability Indicators

In cold regions with large temperature variations, freeze-thaw resistance is the key durability indicator that determines the service life of GRC products. It reflects the material's ability to withstand repeated freeze-thaw cycles without damage while in a water-saturated state. According to the national standard GB/T 15231 "Test Methods for the Properties of Glass Fibre Reinforced Cement", the freeze-thaw resistance of GRC is quantitatively evaluated mainly through the mass loss rate and the retention rate of the relative dynamic elastic modulus after a specified number of freeze-thaw cycles. Through material optimization and process control, Qinglong GRC products can easily meet the freeze-thaw resistance requirements of the harshest environments.

In the GRC exterior wall decoration project of the Harbin Grand Theatre, Qinglong products have withstood long-term exposure to severe cold of -30°C. The project set extremely high freeze-thaw requirements as early as the design stage. In accordance with the GB/T 15231 standard, the Qinglong GRC laboratory conducted 300 rapid freeze-thaw cycle tests (-20°C to +20°C) on specimens made with the mix proportions used in the project. The results showed that the mass loss rate of the specimens was only 0.3%, and the retention rate of the relative dynamic elastic modulus reached as high as 96%, far exceeding the general national standard requirement of "strength loss not exceeding 20% after 100 freeze-thaw cycles". This is attributable to multiple technical safeguards: the extremely low water-cement ratio in the mix, the uniform fine air pores formed by high-quality air-entraining agents, and the fibers' suppression of microcracks.

Key Evaluation Indicators for Freeze-Thaw Resistance

Mass loss rate: the percentage of weight loss caused by surface spalling and chipping of specimens after the freeze-thaw test. High-quality GRC should show almost no visible spalling, with an extremely low mass loss rate (e.g., <0.5%).
Retention rate of the relative dynamic elastic modulus: calculated by measuring the transverse fundamental frequency of specimens before and after freeze-thaw cycles, it sensitively reflects internal material damage (microcrack development). The higher the retention rate, the better the integrity of the internal structure. National standards usually require that strength loss after freeze-thaw not exceed a certain proportion, while the dynamic elastic modulus serves as an earlier and more sensitive early-warning indicator.

Details of the Standard Test Method (GB/T 15231)

The test uses prismatic specimens measuring 40mm×40mm×160mm. After being fully saturated with water, the specimens are placed in a freeze-thaw test chamber, frozen at -20°C±2°C for 4 hours, and then thawed in water at 20°C±2°C for 4 hours, which constitutes one cycle. At regular intervals of cycles (e.g., 25, 50), the specimens are removed to measure their mass and transverse fundamental frequency, and the dynamic elastic modulus is calculated. Testing continues until the specified number of cycles (e.g., 100, 150, 300) is reached or the specimens fail. Performance degradation curves are plotted from the data to scientifically evaluate the freeze-thaw durability grade.

Technical Keys to Improving Freeze-Thaw Resistance

Qinglong GRC's experience shows that improving freeze-thaw resistance is a systematic undertaking: 1) Reducing permeability: preparing a highly dense matrix with water reducers and mineral admixtures is fundamental; 2) Optimizing pore structure: while strictly controlling total porosity, a small amount of high-quality air-entraining agent can be introduced to form uniform, closed micro air pores (20-200μm in diameter), providing a "buffer space" for the expansion of freezing water; 3) Enhancing toughness: the glass fiber network can effectively restrain the propagation of microcracks caused by freeze-thaw cycles, preventing them from interconnecting into macroscopic damage. 4) Production control: adequate curing and later-stage drying reduce the moisture content of products when leaving the factory.

Freeze-thaw resistance is a severe test of the intrinsic quality of GRC. It cannot be judged by experience alone; scientific and rigorous laboratory verification in accordance with national standards is essential. Qinglong GRC not only meets standard testing, but also, with performance data far exceeding conventional requirements, provides convincing technical assurance for its wide application in severe cold regions.
