Simply comparing the per-unit price of UHPC with ordinary concrete is not scientific; a comprehensive analysis from the perspective of whole life cycle cost is required. Although the initial price of UHPC is 10-15 times that of ordinary concrete, its outstanding performance advantages make it more economical over long-term use.
In a sea-crossing bridge deck pavement project in Shenzhen, a detailed life cycle cost analysis showed that although the initial cost of the UHPC pavement layer was 12 times that of ordinary concrete, its 30-year maintenance-free characteristic saved substantial repair costs. Calculations showed that the 30-year total cost of the project using UHPC was actually 40% lower than that of ordinary concrete. More importantly, the UHPC pavement layer is only 50mm thick, one-third that of ordinary concrete. This "thinning" effect reduced the deck's self-weight by 40%, indirectly lowering the bridge structure cost by 15%.
Under the same load, UHPC member dimensions can be reduced by 50%-70%, greatly lowering actual material usage. In structural design, this material saving effect can partially offset the unit price difference.
UHPC has high early strength, allowing earlier formwork removal and a shortened construction period. In a commercial complex project in Shenzhen, the commercial benefits created by the shortened schedule far exceeded the increase in material costs.
Ordinary concrete structures generally require major repairs every 10-15 years, whereas UHPC can achieve 50 years maintenance-free. This maintenance cost difference is highly significant in long-term operation.
Based on a 100-year service life, the average annual cost of UHPC is actually substantially lower than that of ordinary concrete. For major projects, this long-life value is enormous.
It is recommended to adopt the whole life cycle cost analysis method to scientifically evaluate the true economy of UHPC.
