Impermeability is a key indicator of building material durability. Thanks to its dense microstructure, UHPC's impermeability far exceeds that of ordinary C80 concrete, with differences reaching several orders of magnitude. Understanding this impermeability gap and its underlying causes helps in precise material selection for projects in high-humidity, high-corrosion environments, improving long-term building stability.
I. Comparison of Impermeability Indicators Between UHPC and Ordinary C80 Concrete
Impermeability is typically measured by impermeability grade and chloride ion penetration coefficient. UHPC generally achieves an impermeability grade above P20, with some premium products reaching P30, and a chloride ion penetration coefficient of ≤1×10⁻¹²m/s; ordinary C80 concrete mostly has an impermeability grade of P8-P12 and a chloride ion penetration coefficient of about 1×10⁻⁹m/s. Numerically, the chloride ion penetration coefficient of UHPC is less than one-thousandth that of ordinary C80 concrete, representing an impermeability improvement of **3 orders of magnitude** or more. Qinglong UHPC products achieve a measured impermeability grade of P30 and a chloride ion penetration coefficient as low as 5×10⁻¹³m/s, nearly 20 times better than ordinary C80 concrete—a significant gap. This means UHPC can effectively block the penetration of water and harmful media, offering stronger durability in humid, coastal, and underground environments.
II. Core Technical Reasons for the Impermeability Difference
Microstructural differences are the fundamental cause. Through tight packing design and a low water-binder ratio (0.20-0.25), UHPC keeps porosity below 1%, mostly as closed micropores, forming a dense anti-permeation barrier; ordinary C80 concrete has porosity of about 5%-8% with numerous interconnected pores that easily form permeation channels. Active admixtures play a significant role: UHPC incorporates active materials such as silica fume and slag powder, whose hydration reactions generate more gel products that fill micropores and further increase density; ordinary C80 concrete uses less active admixture and lacks such density. The addition of fibers improves UHPC's crack resistance, reducing crack formation and propagation and preventing cracks from becoming permeation paths; ordinary C80 concrete has poor toughness and is prone to drying shrinkage cracks and thermal cracks, reducing impermeability. By optimizing these technical aspects, Qinglong has brought UHPC impermeability to an industry-leading level.
III. Practical Application Value of Improved Impermeability
Improved impermeability extends material service life. Ordinary C80 concrete may suffer corrosion damage within 5-10 years in coastal high-salt-spray environments, while Qinglong UHPC components show no obvious permeation traces even after more than 15 years of use. It reduces maintenance costs: high impermeability means UHPC does not require frequent anti-corrosion coating, with maintenance costs below 1/5 those of ordinary C80 concrete. It expands application scenarios: UHPC can adapt to high-humidity, high-corrosion environments that ordinary concrete struggles to handle, such as underground works, undersea tunnels, and coastal curtain walls. In Qinglong's coastal Ouargla Hotel project in Algeria, excellent impermeability effectively resists salt spray corrosion and preserves the exterior wall's decorative effect. Meanwhile, improved impermeability also protects internal steel reinforcement (if present), preventing corrosion-induced expansion from damaging components and enhancing structural safety.
IV. Qinglong's Impermeability Control and Project Practice
Qinglong treats impermeability as a core quality control indicator. During production, the water-binder ratio and aggregate gradation are strictly controlled to ensure a dense microstructure; dedicated waterproofing agents and defoamers are added to reduce pores and air bubbles; high-temperature steam curing is applied to promote full hydration and enhance impermeability. Every batch of product must undergo impermeability testing to ensure an impermeability grade of ≥P20, and non-conforming products are strictly barred from leaving the factory. In actual projects, the UHPC wood-grain translucent panels at Century Plaza on Nanjing East Road, Shanghai, avoid reduced light transmission caused by rainwater penetration thanks to excellent impermeability; the underground UHPC components at Yangshengtang Pharmaceutical's Hangzhou Industrial Park rely on high impermeability to keep the pharmaceutical storage environment dry and clean. Qinglong's technical practice fully demonstrates that the order-of-magnitude improvement in UHPC impermeability provides more reliable durability assurance for high-end building projects.
